Why CPR Training Matters: A School Nurse’s Quick Action Saves a Life on a Utah Trail
On Memorial Day, what began as a peaceful hike in Utah’s Little Wild Horse Canyon turned into a life-threatening emergency - and a powerful reminder of why CPR and first aid training are essential for everyone, not just healthcare workers.
School nurse Ashley Anderson was hiking with her family when she heard screaming echoing through the canyon. A 79-year-old grandfather had fallen 20 feet into a slot canyon, sustaining a serious head injury. Without hesitation, Anderson jumped into action. She scrambled down to reach the man, immediately assessing his condition, stabilizing his head and spine, and providing aid until emergency crews arrived nearly an hour later.
Her training made all the difference.
As a nurse, Ashley had the skills to stay calm, assess for signs of trauma, and give care that likely prevented the situation from worsening. But what if she hadn't been trained? What if no one there had known basic CPR or first aid?
It's CPR Week. This week is all about getting certified before an emergency happens. You never know when you’ll be the first - or only - responder on the scene. And the truth is, emergencies don’t wait until a hospital is nearby.
Here’s what you can learn from Ashley’s story:
- CPR and first aid training aren’t just for medical professionals.
- Acting quickly in the first few minutes after an injury can save a life or prevent permanent damage.
- You can become a hero - to a stranger, a loved one, or someone else’s grandparent - by being prepared.
If this story moved you, don’t wait to get certified. We offer CPR and First Aid courses year-round, and special sessions during CPR Week. Because readiness isn't just about knowledge — it's about responsibility.
